Poet, writer, broadcaster and former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen takes the helm as Guest Director of Brighton Festival 2013 – three weeks of unrivalled arts celebration across the city, which includes the world premiere of Rosen's new guide to the orchestra, The Great Enormo. “It's a wonderful opportunity for me to be involved with Brighton Festival. It's exciting but it's also going to be a challenge! I am a great believer in festivals - they are an informal college of the arts for everyone.” Year 4 may have a chance to meet Michael during the Children's Parade in May 2013. |

A quick reminder that the rehearsal slots for the Battle of the Bands will become available in January. Sign-up sheets will be posted outside the music room every Friday morning to allow bands to allocate their preferred slot for the following week.
Depending on demand I may allocate one week of rehearsal slots per year group to ensure everyone has a fair chance of signing up. The Battle of the Bands page should have all of the information and rules that you need. There are some vacancies for singing lessons with Eva Rustige. The lessons will occur on Monday mornings in the canteen. To download an application form or find out more information and contact Eva, visit the Private Lessons page. Thank you.
The next Kesho Amahoro letter has been distributed today. You can download it on the Kesho Amahoro page, It includes a form, to be completed, to indicate the level of commitment of your child and, if possible, yourself. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have an questions or suggestions. Many thanks.
Orchestra, Singing Squad and Super Choir will perform the Christmas Concert again next Thursday morning for an audience of teachers and the rest of the children in school. I would like the children to bring their 'costume' on Thursday 20th December (black clothing and Christmas 'stuff' - tinsel or a Santa hat etc.) Thank you.
Orchestra, Singing Squad and Super Choir were tremendous last night. They sang and played their hearts out and the audience whooped and cheered. Thank you very much to everyone who attended.
There is now a search bar on the website to allow you to quickly find the information you are seeking. I hope you find it useful.
WEDNESDAY 12th DECEMBER - 1.30pm - 3.00pm and 6.00pm - 7.30pm in the HALL
The children must wear black but they can decorate themselves in tinsel, elf ears, reindeer antlers, santa hats and face paint if they choose to! For the evening performance, the children need to arrive at school at 5.45pm and come straight into the hall to warm up (and set up - orchestra). The evening concert is due to finish at 7.30pm. Please ensure that arrangements have been made for the collection of your child at 7.30pm. Donation buckets will happily accept your generous cash and shrapnel at the end of the evening. Any money collected from the concerts will help to fund the Kesho Amahoro project and future performing arts developments at Downs Junior School. Many thanks for your support. Wishing you magical festivities. Congratulations to the Super Choir, Singing Squad and Orchestra for their first united performance of the year for an audience of ex-pupils, many of whom attended Downs Junior School in the 1940s and 1950s. Their feedback was extremely positive and they'd like to pass on their thanks to all of the children. I am personally very proud of the kids, especially for their volume and enthusiasm - GREAT TEAM!
CONGRATULATIONS to the Year 6 Super Choir for their performance at the Brighton Centre last night. They participated in the Primary Schools' Christmas Concert along with nearly 2,000 children from schools around Brighton and Hove. It was a fantastic evening of festive songs and live music from the Brighton & Hove Youth Big Band and Orchestra.
