The information below applies to lessons delivered by BHMA teachers: (violin, viola, cello, mini bass, woodwind and brass)
- Pupils start by learning together in small groups
- Pupils receive an Introductory Course of lessons in their first term at the end of which they receive a written report
- Lessons last for 30 minutes and usually take place at school during the school day
- 30 lessons are offered across the academic year (10 lessons per term)
- Pupils are given opportunities to perform individually and as part of the group to support the development of listening and ensemble skills whilst developing their instrumental technique
- Pupils follow a curriculum developed by Music & Arts instrumental and singing teachers linked to a national framework for instrumental learning
- Individual lessons are available through the BHMA Advanced Scheme for pupils at an appropriate stage of learning
- Places are allocated on a first come first served basis on receipt of your online application.
- When teaching groups have been established, the instrumental teacher will contact you to confirm the date and time of the first lessons
- When you have received confirmation that your child will start lessons, arrangements need to be made to acquire an instrument in readiness for the first lessons.
- If it is not possible to start tuition you will receive confirmation that your child has been placed on a waiting list. Waiting lists are regularly monitored and we would aim to start within a term.
For more information, please email the specific instrumental teacher or visit the
Music and Arts Service website or contact Anna Rusbatch.

IMPORTANT
PLEASE NOTE: Children are only permitted to receive private lessons for ONE instrument in class curriculum lesson time. Tuition for a second instrument may be received, but ONLY if the lesson for that instrument is before/after school or during break, lunch or assemblies. If you would like your child to receive tuition for a second instrument within the school premises, it is your responsibility, when applying for lessons, to inform the new teacher that your child is only able to receive tuition before/after school or during lunchtime.
Please bear in mind that some peripatetic staff will not be able to accommodate this within their own timetable, therefore, tuition for a second instrument may not be possible within school. If this is the case, it would be worth seeking private tuition out of school time, either at your own home, at the teacher's home, or at a music centre. Please contact Miss Rusbatch if you would like the contact details for private tutors who are not associated with Downs Junior School.
