Talented flautist, Helen Whitaker, came into school today to perform on the flute and recorder. Helen performed a huge range of songs and styles, demonstrating the sort of songs you could soon be playing, if you started lessons. She also played beautiful soft pieces and complex fast-paced pieces. Most of the children recognised the song of the bird from Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. For more information about lessons for flute or recorder, visit the Woodwind page. |

This morning, the 143 children who attended Mega Choir were in fine voice and full of energy. Have a look at the video below. Can you spot yourself?! ![]() Huge thanks to our guitar teacher Tom Butterworth for coming into school last Friday to talk about learning the guitar. He brought a special guest with him - Isaac Sydenham. Isaac started learning guitar at Downs Junior School in 2004. Tom was his teacher. Isaac now plays in Tom's band (Three Days Straight) and also teaches guitar. Such a wonderful musical legacy for Tom and the school. Welcome back to Downs Junior School Isaac - thank you very much for sharing your talents with us. To hear and see some of what Tom and Isaac treated us to on Friday, visit the GUITAR LESSONS page. Thank you to everyone who attended Mega Choir this morning. It was an invigorating and inspiring mid-week treat. You sounded GREAT. This is a very encouraging start to what could be the biggest and best musical term EVER!
For the children who would still like to join, or for those who forgot to come this week, or for those whose alarm didn't go off (!) we'll see you next week. Once a signed permission slip has been received, your child may join the choir next week. Please note - slips for new members will NOT be accepted after Friday 30th September. School orchestra rehearsals start NEXT week (Thursday 29th September). Thank you if you've already returned your permission slip. Super Choir also started in fine tune this week, despite half of the year group whizzing off to Mount Caburn for the day! Keep singing kids! This choir is certainly going to be MEGA this term - over 100 children have already returned their signed slips. The first rehearsal is tomorrow morning. Please bring your child to the main entrance on Rugby Road from 07:55. The internal door will be opened at 07:58 approximately! Your child must then take their belongings to their locker, put their lunch box (if applicable) in their class trolley (in the middle playground), then enter the hall and sit on the floor, ready for registration.
