The final Christmas concerts will take place tomorrow (Wednesday 18th December) in the hall. Mega Choir, Super Choir and Orchestra will perform for the rest of the children and staff in school between break and lunchtime tomorrow. 10:45 - 11:25 and 11:35 - 12:15 (please note the time changes).
The children who will be performing will need to bring their 'costumes' and orchestra will need to remember to bring their instruments and music. Thank you. Mega Choir, Super Choir and Orchestra rehearsals have now ended for 2013.
Clubs will resume in the second week of the spring term - week beginning 13th January 2014. Well done to the Downs Junior School violinists and their wonderful teacher, Lisa de Simone. The Christmas Strings concert today was wonderful. It's lovely to witness so much musical progress.
Thank you to everybody who came to witness the wonderful Downs Junior School choirs and orchestra. Congratulations to the children who were performing - you were BRILLIANT.
We will all be performing again next Wednesday for the rest of the children in school. Orchestra, please remember to bring your instruments. EXTRA CONCERTS:
Friday 13th December - Christmas Strings with Lisa de Simone, the school violinists and Miss Rusbatch - 3pm - 4pm. Wednesday 18th December - Mega Choir, Super Choir & Orchestra perform for the whole school - 10:00-10:30 and 10:45-11:15. Thank you to the members of Mega Choir and Super Choir who were able to join Miss Rusbatch in the middle playground today at 3.15pm to sing some Christmas songs to welcome our guests to this year's Winter Fair.
Following a sense of closure at the Kesho Amahoro DVD party last night, Miss Rusbatch announced details of the 'next project' to the Year 6 children today.
Downs Junior School will again be joined by students at Braeburn School in Kenya and together will return to the International Youth Arts Festival in Kingston to perform on the Rose Theatre Stage. Next year however, the team will perform 'Albatross' the musical. The Downs Junior Super Choir, Mega Choir and Orchestra performed brilliantly today for the Ex-Pupils' Christmas Concert. The audience consisted of men and women who attended Downs Junior School in the 1940s and 1950s. Included in the audience of Downs Junior alumni was a celebrated composed and Mis Rusbatch's musical inspiration, Howard Blake. Not only did he attend the concert but he also performed the much-loved 'Walking In The Air' on piano, from the film 'The Snowman'. Thank you very much to everybody who attended the premiere of the Kesho Amahoro DVD last night. It was a full house in the school hall as the cast, crew and their families revisited fond memories from July 2013. The stage was covered in food, drinks and sweet snacks - kindly donated by families and lots of DVDs were bought.
If you'd like to buy a DVD, you can purchase them from the school office - £10 each. Many thanks in advance as DVD sales will cover the cost of creating the DVDs in the first place with, hopefully, some funds to contribute towards future projects. Miss Rusbatch is overwhelmingly excited to announce that Howard Blake - the stunningly talented composer of the music for the film The Snowman, among many other things - will definitely be attending the Ex-Pupils Christmas Concert this Thursday. The Mega Choir, Super Choir and Orchestra are lucky to be meeting and performing for such a celebrated musician and composer. I'm sure that Howard will be feeling equally as honoured to witness the musical talents of the children at Downs Junior School on Thursday. Miss Rusbatch, for one, will be particularly star-struck when meeting Howard on Thursday, as she has thoroughly enjoyed playing "Walking In The Air" on piano, every single Christmas Day, without fail, since the age of 6. She even managed to find a piano on Christmas Day whilst travelling in outback Australia and whilst living in Kenya! Howard Blake was a student at Downs Junior School and we are delighted to be welcoming him back to his old stomping ground. You can buy The Snowman soundtrack HERE.Congratulations to all of the children in the Year 6 Super Choir who sang their Christmassy hearts out during the Primary Schools Christmas Concert at the Brighton Centre on Monday 2nd December, alongside 1,300 schoolchildren. From all accounts, the audience went home singing the songs and feeling positively festive!
Many thanks to the Brighton & Hove Music & Arts Service for organising yet another successful event. The live music by the Wind Orchestra and the Big Band was wonderful. Year 4 journeyed to Glyndebourne on Friday 29th November to watch an intimate and interactive performance of Captain Blood's Revenge: A Pirate Opera in the Jerwood Studio. Emil was asked to conduct the small ensemble of musicians, Joel was asked to remove a small dagger (a plastic one) from a sailor's back and Rosie held little Baby Peggatty (a cabbage-patch doll)!
