Girls who will be auditioning for the role of Elsie will perform a scene in which Solomon chooses to share his paintings and pictures with Elsie. This reveals a precious and private insight into what Solomon's life was like before he was stolen away, into a life of slavery. They will be expected to perform the song Paintings of His Soul.
Children who will be auditioning for a main chorus part will be auditioned in groups of 6 and will perform as sailors on board a ship as they share their understanding of the myth of John de Conquer (the Albatross). They will be expected to sing the song John de Conquer.
