Rusalka, Dvorak’s grandiose operatic take on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, effortlessly entwines elements of Slavic folklore
to create a cruel, dark, and at times touching fairy tale.
The story follows the water nymph Rusalka, who after swimming to the surface falls head-over-heels in love with a Prince. He cannot see her and so her only chance of becoming visible to him and of entering the human world is to make a pact with the wicked witch Ježibaba. Naturally, it doesn’t go to plan.
Dvorak’s music ebbs and flows, magically conjuring up images of dark woods and deep lakes; the strings sparkle and shimmer like a flickering shoal of neon tetra.
