Year 6 Topic: Immigration / Refugees
Song-writing on the theme of peace, immigration and refugees

1. Purpose (why compose/write?)
2. Audience (performance opportunities)
3. Research (topic & existing examples)
4. Whose Perspective? (narrative / characters)
5. Emotion (music & evoke - How will the audience feel?)
6. Lyrics (structure & message)
7. Musical Elements (how to create)
8. Chord Patterns (emotion)
9. Melody & Rhythm (compose)
10. Recording
Our composition and song-writing process evolves organically. We may follow the stages above, we may skip a stage, we may re-visit stages or change the order in which we approach our song-writing journey, but we always focus on the PURPOSE.

Purpose & Audience

Why write songs about the refugee crisis?

Help others understand the situation - raise awareness and educate them.
Inspire others to want to help.
News reports often desensitise the facts for audiences and readers by discussing data and statistics. Music has the power to connect with people's feelings and emotions. Music can ignite empathy, unite people and engender support and positive change.

Where and when could the songs be performed?

Why are refugees arriving in Europe?

- Kesho Amahoro - Peace Tomorrow -
The Celebration of the Triumph of the Human Spirit

Written by Lizzie Jago with Music and Lyrics by Anna Rusbatch

Kesho Amahoro (Peace Tomorrow) is based on a true story and portrays what life can be like for children in a refugee camp and the role of Non Governmental Organisations, such as UNHCR, IRC, Save the Children, Care, Oxfam and Tear Fund.
